With summer around the corner, many students and staff are starting to plan where to spend their time—and money. If you’re looking to discover hidden gems, trending spots, or trusted community favorites, several Mavericks have recommendations to explore in Katy, Houston, and the surrounding areas.
“I would definitely not go to one of the chain restaurants. I think Houston has a bunch of smaller, like, mom-and-pop restaurants,” teacher Sara Brownlee said.
Local Favorites
Henderson & Kane
Located in Houston’s museum district, Henderson & Kane specializes in Texas-style barbecue. The interior is styled like an old-fashioned general store, offering smoked meat plates and sandwiches with outdoor seating and a kids’ menu—ideal for families looking for a cozy, rustic vibe.
“I have not been disappointed in any of their dishes, but anything with their brisket is the best,” Brownlee said.
Ooh La La Dessert Boutique
Ooh La La Dessert Boutique, based in Park Row and established in 2007, is known for its handcrafted sweets and rotating seasonal cupcake flavors—like pumpkin spice in the fall.
“There’s a bunch of sweets, but they’re mostly known for their cheesecakes and cupcakes. I usually get their cupcakes, they’re so good,” sophomore Abi Lopez said.
Baccailis Cafe
Located on Fry Road, Baccailis Cafe offers American homestyle dining with a menu that includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
“The waiters are super nice. Overall, it has breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Think Denny’s but better,” Lopez said.
Black Bear Diner
Known for its bear-themed booths and cozy, cabin-inspired atmosphere, Black Bear Diner is a popular stop for homestyle classics. Guests can enjoy everything from chicken fried steak to fluffy pancakes any time of day.
“I like the volcano, but it depends on whether I feel like pancakes or a big breakfast. The big griddle is like sausage and bacon and still a couple of pancakes, but the volcano’s like four pancakes. Their pancakes are really good,” sophomore Buck Rogers said.
El Vaquero
El Vaquero serves traditional Tex-Mex dishes like enchiladas and fajitas and is known for its nostalgic interior and flavorful salsas.
“They serve all kinds of Mexican-style and authentic Mexican food. I like ordering the steak,” sophomore Samuel Espino said.
Whether it’s grabbing a cupcake, enjoying barbecue, or sitting down for a hearty breakfast, these local favorites offer something for everyone. As Mavericks head into summer, spots like these give students and staff a chance to unwind, connect, and enjoy the flavors of their community.
