Ian Farrell, a seasoned band member with seven years of experience playing Euphonium baritone, has discovered that high school band is more than just a hobby. It’s a transformative experience that shines a light on the rewards of band life and the skills he’s gained, shaping him into the person he is today.
“When I first joined the band, I had no idea what I was getting myself into,” Farrell said. “I just had a feeling for it.”
One of the most significant benefits Farrell has derived from the band is the opportunity to meet new people and form lasting friendships.
“Yes, it definitely was really fun meeting new people,” he said. “Always have other members you gain a long friendship with.”
In addition to social skills, Farrell has also honed a variety of practical skills through his involvement in band practice and competitions.
“Learning instruments and gaining a lot of new knowledge, such as reading music and understanding it,” he said.
“You find something that will help you along the way,” Farrell said.
Farrell’s experiences in band have also taught him the importance of handling constructive criticism well.
“A lot of being in band is to handle it to learn and improve,” he said.
“Many people in the band already take it very well, since I mean, that’s the point: to always be better,” Farrell said.
Band is more than just a hobby; it’s a lifelong investment in personal and professional development.
As Farrell said, “You’ll not only learn to play an instrument but also acquire skills you can use in the real world.”
The real point of joining a band isn’t just about playing music; it’s about learning how to learn, how to collaborate, how to persevere, and grow with others.
“You get free letterman’s [jacket] at the end of the year and have things to put on your college applications and learn skills not other people have that you can show off with,” Farrell said.
If you’re considering joining a band, don’t hesitate to give it a try. You might just discover a hidden talent or passion that you never knew you had. As Farrell has shown us, band is more than just a hobby; it’s a metamorphosis that can enrich your life in countless ways.
“Just do it. Join,” Farrell said.
